Brittle Pot

Its 12:16 AM on the clock and i could not sleep, so plugging myself to net again and blogging about few of questions that causing me headaches from past 2 days.

1. Few months back few of my french friends were in Bangalore, while coming after finishing lunch from a restaurant, they asked me a question, what i feel about where India is heading, can indias future built upon software ??.

2. Saw one of my friend Aruns Site, he mentioned somewhere that few of his friends asked the question why he is creating a website and also he mentioned he was no good at maths when in college, allthough he is appreciating now !!, that when he applied it practically (Through concept of photography), is there something basically wrong here ??.

3. One of my friend working in IISC who is working on pure science on Fluid Mechanics, was telling the difficulty of getting himself a properly paid job.

4. if you do a survey of the resumes in any software company in india, you can see most of the engineers from science different than Computers !, and who are really good in their respective subjects. whats the great fun here, if you just want some people, who want to be software TypeWriters (read as Engineers !), remove these time consuming degrees and start some langauge training institues.

5. A guy who really doesn't know whats the difference between an OS Thread and Chinese Noodle is still paid a Bomb just to email and chat in companies, on other hand a pure mathematician ends up being an teacher for primary school ?!!.

6. you wake up every morning and think of what are you going to do that day and inside you feel suffocation and you can feel somebody inside you trying to get out, but could not due to the self articulated boundaries.

7. What exactly i am doing !?, am i really happy in the things i am doing ?

8. I always thought the things they teached in college and school, was nothing but some *%&*^W@#, after 4 years out of college i still feel the same, but the irony is the same system is praised everywhere, is it just me or the world has gone mad !??

9. A Physics Lecturer teaching about Atom, shouts at a student who asks a question on planetary motion. is he rightful in doing this ?

10. Ask 99% of the Software Engineers, why exactly they are in software, the answers range from undying love for technology and opportunities for creative thinking !!, well only one word comes to my mind about them, Bu*@#$!. So does it mean, other feilds are dead and superior than the computer science ??

11. Where we all went wrong and was there really any options ?? or is it too late to correct ??

12. Are we all cowards in accepting our helplessness and becoming slaves to the society, bound to moral values and relations and fear for survival, is there any way out ??!

13. When we say we think, are we really thinking !!??

14. Time for me to go to a Psychiatrist ?? for getting above questions in my mind !!.

you think the above questions are anywhere related ??? I will be happy to see some comments,

Contemporaily, Very relevant questions... Well, before i proceed with my comment, let me clarify that its ME(Arun) whom, santhosh has mentioned in point number 2. I would like to just comment about the same thing in a different perspective.

Please bear in mind that i am commenting with india as a reference. Here, the education system and the job market never go hand in hand. The job market(like software) would be addressing the current problem domain where as the education will be addressing something which is over and out loooong back. Basically because, the government machinary moves slow. The education system(syllabus etc.,) is governed by government and the job market is more of private enterprise. So there is actually no sync between them at all!!

Lets see the education system first.

1. The elementary schooling, where the foundation needs to be laid, is haywire. You can see the so called 'convents' coming up like mushrooms in every nook and corner. They just lack the basic infrastructure.

2. The age where a child really learns by looking, experiencing and experimenting at things, is spoiled by locking it within a confinement(called as 'school') and forced the by-heart methodology.

3. The attitude is tuned in such a way, that instead of instilling interest to learn, they are tuned towards concentraing on finding shortcuts to score high marks in exam.

a. You can see every child pushed into tutions (from 1st std till end of his education, he will be going to tutions!!! morning 9-5 class, 7-10 tution!!).

b. You can see every child either by-hearting things, or solving previous year question papers.. the so called, most important questions!!

4. The age where the logic needs to be developed, where the rational reasoning needs to be developed is spent in 'blindly securing high marks'.

With such a backdrop, what kind of 'prolitarians' would you expect to pass out every year!? You will get a huge set of distinction students, who are good for nothing in the job market(though, you have exceptions). They are still capable of solving 'previous year question papers' or 'by-hearting' things. But, in the actual scenario at the implementation level, they fail. They are so used to spoon-feeding that they would have lost the capability to 'hunt their prey on their own'.

Especially in the software industry, you can see people flooded from various educational backgrounds. You find people who have done a 'technical' degree in Chemical, Industrial production and many other fields. More surprising is, you also find people who are totally from non-technial field also, though the percentage is very very less. (I am in software industry from past 12+ years, and my qualification in Master of Arts in literature! I would'nt survive here for 12+ years if i were really unfit for this field. Maybe i am the only one!! Dunno!).

There is HUGE gap between knowledge and schooling. Its very sad that the job maket guages a persons knowledge, purely based on his marks in academics (This is one of the major reasons that the mindset is tuned to just securing high marks, in whatever shortcut way possible). Maybe a proper guaging needs to be deviced while job placement. Without having a passion for what we do, we cant give our 100%. People who are not even capable of 'hunting on thier own',flooding the software industry just for the sake of money, try to lead a 'safe' life here(though i would not discuss much on this, every such person who feels the 'insecurity' will try to stay 'safe'. This, he can do so,by either groupism, 'chamchagiri' and so on..). Though every individual is not expected to be a genius, atleast certain level of credibility is expected.

These are just random thougths, which initally came up to my mind when i read the questions. Maybe taken some more time, i can organize this comment in a better way.. but, still the toughts remain same.

Even after reading your questions, I really feel there are many positives left in our country. The best example being people like you, who think about it. And there are people like Arun who try to address the problem, because, defining a problem is the first step in solving a problem.
I don't think you need to consult a doctor for such things, but you really need to consult a matchmaker :)

Well! All said and done. Because of our education system only we have more qualified people than china, or America. Yes, America has more lateral thinkers, but look at the domains where Indian's are at the top positions just because of current education system. To me the education system is good and as you said"It is important to learn the past , to think about future":)
